FAQ

What is this?

The Coddiwomple is an event where we all rush out, some a bit apprehensively, to follow ‘the clues’ into the forest… but some may find the directions and destinations a little vague but otherwise direct, in some ways, once we get out there…. A tip of the hat to the infamous Barkley Marathons in Tennessee that Rik and Josh participated in 2010.

It's a Multi Race Director affair. Each of us hides 3-4 books, but without any of the others knowledge so we can participate too.

With clues in hand brave souls will set off from Loni's house solo or in pairs to find a page of the hidden books. As everyone makes their way safely ‘home’, beverages and warm tasty food will be available!

Be prepared - on and off the trails will be wet with spring melt, ‘hunt’ can take anywhere from 1 to 8 hrs, 3 to 7 miles or more, - having a place to safely store your pages, clues, compass, phone, water and a snack isn't a bad idea. Be familiar with a compass at least one the clues has involved finding a reading( from the post go 168 degrees or go NE)

Everyone will get the clues that morning. Please try to arrive by 9am, giving yourselves time to check in and review the Master map. At 9:30 we have the meeting and hand out the actual clues. We will start sending people out at 10, if not sooner. There will be a little time to review the clues before we are sent out the door a few minutes apart.

We will be assigning which clue/Book you have to start with, that way we can send people out faster and there will not be such a bottle neck. (also RD's have an extra book(s) for each RD to find, so to slow us down )

If you are nervous about joining us please don't be. The greatest part of this hunt is just getting out there and trying. Clues are given an estimated difficulty, so if you just want to have some fun and not actually compete you can pick just the clues you want to do. We have had a variety of people come and play with us. Some people team up, some walk, some run, some bring their kids, dogs or poorly informed friends, some only choose to find a few books and some get lost… but just for a little bit!! We do recommend bringing your cell phones. We keep tabs on people as needed. And most people use the compass on their phones vs carrying one.

When is it?

To keep with the tradition of the Barkely Marathons starting around April Fools day we try to hold the event on the first Saturday in April.  The date is subject to change and shifts slightly pending on when Easter falls.

Where is it?

The S/F is at a private residence, so we do NOT publish the address except for participants. But again with a true nod to the Barkley, the unofficial start and finish is at the orange gate located at Bog 4 Corners of Fox Forest here in Hillsboro NH

How do i participate?

"You gotta know a guy."   Ask the right people, get the location, bring a license plate to add to our collection and get ready to get lost in a blend of trail and off trail adventure.

Why would i participate?

Your guess is as good as mine.

How much does it cost?

We do not charge for this event as it's set up old school "Fat Ass Ultra Race" style.  However our lovely host does accept cash and venmo donations that helps us continue to expand our clues and props for the future years.
