HISTORY

UNDER CONSTRUCTION - I'll finish this someday

How race came to be:

As many of you may know, our race is based on The Barkley. The Barkley Marathons is an ultramarathon trail race held each year in Frozen Head State Park in Morgan County, Tennessee. This was still a trail running enigma when Josh and Rik were able to go in 2010. Sadly now Wikipedia along with many other platforms have plenty of info about The Barkley.

Back then, to get into The Barkley 100 you needed to fill out an essay on a certain date at a certain time and send it along to some fella named Laz.  Rik "offered his first born as a sacrifice."   In hindsight Josh realized his pop had been trying to sacrifice him  for YEARS before they  actually got in(they are still the first father son to toe the line as far as we know).  The other requirement for registration was  $1.60 (decided by how many kilometers you’d run) and a license plate from your state/country of origin. The few unlucky ones would get the response of, "we regret to inform you that you've been selected." . After that, you just had to make your way to the starting line of  a race where you were almost guaranteed not to finish and you would have to buy your own map. ”Since dad had used me as a ‘sacrifice’ I didn’t think much of it. I wouldn't need a plate, I'm not originally from NH. Upon arrival at the park n ride Pop said, “where’s your plate?”  Well SOB, I grabbed my tool kit in the back of my rig and proceeded to tear the front plate off of my pick-up in that parking lot in Bennington VT.  You can see the one I pulled off the background of the newer documentaries.  “123 7229”  it’s nothing special, but it’s probably why they can show it. The other remains on my living room wall. “
